BOM types

A BOM is an assembly, a product, made up of assemblies and components. If an assembly is used as a component of a product it is referred to as a subassembly, or a semi-finished product. A Sage X3 bill of materials (BOM) can be defined as one of 4 types:

  • Commercial BOM
  • Commercial BOMs are not used in the Product design module.

  • Production BOM
  • Production BOMs can be added to product design BOMs as subassemblies, or semi-finished products.

Production BOMs are stored in the Products - BOMs table (ITMBOM).

  • Subcontracting BOM
  • Subcontracting BOMs can be added to product design BOMs as subassemblies, or semi-finished products.

Subcontracting BOMs are stored in the Products - BOMs table (ITMBOM).

  • Product design BOM
  • Product design BOMs are developed independently from commercial and production BOMs, and subcontract BOMs.

Product design BOMs can be added as design subassemblies to other product design BOMs. Once the design has been approved they can be published to stock, the build can be tested as a "prototype" product, and the "best" design revision released as a full production BOM.

This guide only covers the creation, management, and publication of product design BOMs using the Product design function (GESNPI). It covers the use of in-production, and subcontracting BOMs with product design BOMs, but not the creation, or maintenance of commercial, in-production, or subcontracting BOMs.
