Creating company groups

In GST groupings function (GESGSTGRP), you need to create at least one GST group to report GST and BAS values using the GST reporting periods function (GESGSTPER).

While complete details on setting up groups is in the online help, here are some important points to consider when creating groups.

Membership companies

  • A group can have a single member. That said, a company with no affiliates must create a group of one company before reporting.
  • One member of the group must be designated as the "Head entity" that is responsible for all of the group's tax obligations such as paying tax and submitting tax returns. The Head entity represents the group as a single entity for tax purposes.
  • Group members must adhere to the following conditions:
    • It is assigned Australian legislation and has an Australian Business Number (ABN).
    • It is a legal company.
    • The AUSVAT - Australian VAT (LOC group, AUS chapter) parameter is set to Yes for this company.
    • A company can only be a part of one active group at a time.
  • By default, a group is active upon creation and available for tax reporting.
  • If a company leaves or a new company joins the group, you need to set the group to Inactive if you want to preserve the group structure history. You can then create a new group and set that to Active.

Reporting periods

  • You cannot delete a group if reporting periods have been created for that group already.
  • Reporting frequency, monthly or quarterly, is set for the group and affects the GST reporting periods. Once you establish reporting periods for a group, this setting cannot be changed.
