Setting up Product design
- Function profile (GESAFT)
- Functional authorization (GESAFP)
- Parameter values (ADPVAL)
- Structures (GESANM)
- Users (GESAUS)
General parameters
Open: Setup > General parameters > Parameter values
You can set parameters to provide default entry values. The following group is applicable to Product design:
- TC chapter (Common data) / NPI group (Product design)
To add, or amend the default parameters click Detail from the Actions menu.
General parameters: Product design
Define the following parameter at the folder level to control the entry and management of new product design BOMs (TC / NPI):
DESIGNUOM |
The default unit of measurement code to be used for product design BOMs. Context (Product design creation): Used in unit of measure (UOM) conversions. |
Functional authorization
Open: Setup > Users > Function profile
Open: Setup > Users > Functional authorization
Open: Setup > Users > Users
Use the Functional profile function (GESAFT) to define functional profile codes for the Product design module user roles:
- Super user: A super user ultimately has full control over the creation, revision, or deletion of a product design BOM revision, and the progress of it through the design cycle. They have administrative rights to advance, or reverse the product design revision through the stages of the design, and approval cycles as they deem necessary.
- Manager: A manager user has full control over the creation, revision, and deletion of a product design BOM revision until the Development completed stage of the design cycle. Once the Development completed stage is reached, a user role with manager authorization cannot change the component details.
- Internal approver: An "approver" is a "subject matter expert". An internal approver is an individual within your organization that has the expertise to adequately assess a product design BOM revision from both a business, and a technical perspective, and to provide input into the design. They have administrative rights to advance, or reverse the product design revision through the stages of the design, and approval cycles as they deem necessary.
- External approver: An external approver is an individual from outside your organization that has the expertise to adequately assess a product design BOM revision from both a business, and a technical perspective, and to provide input into the design. They have administrative rights to advance, or reverse the product design revision through the stages of the design, and approval cycles as they deem necessary.
Some controls are in place to ensure a product design BOM revision can only advance to the next stage in both the design, and the approval cycles when the current stage is completed. Authorization options control which processes each user role can perform, and the level of access granted to the role. Use the Functional authorization function (GESAFP) to define access controls to the Product design module and functionality for each functional profile code.
- The highest access level takes priority for a functional profile code with multiple levels of access.
- A functional profile code with the All authorized functions check box selected automatically has the highest level of authorization for the Product design function (GESNPI), authorization option 4.
- The default for the GESNPI - Product design function is set as 1234CMS authorization.
- A functional profile code that only has the default standard CMS authorization options can only view product design BOMs.
Functional profile code | User role | Function | Authorization option |
---|---|---|---|
NPIEA | External approver | GESNPI | 1M |
NPIIA | Internal approver | GESNPI | 2M |
NPIMR | Manager | GESNPI | 3CMS |
NPISU | Super user | GESNPI | 4CMS |
A functional profile code set for 123CMS authorization has the same level of access as a functional profile code set for 3CMS authorization. Both 123CMS and 3CMS authorization options represent a Manager role with access to create, modify, and delete a product design BOM revision.
A functional profile code set for 123CMS authorization has a lower level of access than a functional profile code set for 4CMS authorization. Authorization options 4CMS represents a Super user role with access to create, modify, and delete a product design BOM revision at later stages of the design, and approval cycles than a Manager role set for 123CMS authorization.
To implement more complex security you can split the authorization options for a specific role. For example, 3C authorization represents a Manager role with access to create a product design BOM revision; 3M authorization represents a Manager role with access to modify a product design BOM revision but not to create a product design BOM revision; 3S authorization represents a Manager role that only has access to delete a product design BOM revision.
Functional profile code | User role | Function | Authorization option |
---|---|---|---|
NPIMR | Manager 1 | GESNPI | 3C |
NPIMR | Manager 2 | GESNPI | 3M |
NPIMR | Manager 3 | GESNPI | 3S |
Function code | Function name | Access | Option - Significance | Action / Option description | Comments |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Yes / No | C | Create | Both function codes in this table. | ||
Yes / No | M | Change | Both function codes in this table. | ||
Yes / No | S | Delete | Both function codes in this table. | ||
GESNPI | Product design | Yes / No | 1 | External approver |
Access permits modification to the product design, and approval statuses only. Access does not permit creation, or deletion of a product design BOM revision. |
Yes / No | 2 | Internal approver |
Access permits modification to the product design, and approval statuses only. Access does not permit creation, or deletion of a product design BOM revision. |
||
Yes / No | 3 | Manager |
Access permits the following:
|
||
Yes / No | 4 | Super user |
Access permits the following:
|
||
GESNPIPC | Product design | Yes / No | Permits access to the "new material" functionality. |
Sequence numbers
Open: Setup > General parameters > Sequence number definition > Structures
To generate product sequence numbers automatically when a new material, or a design product is published to stock from the Product design function (GESNPI), the components that make up the structure of the product sequence numbers are defined for individual product categories.
Sequence | Description | Default formula |
---|---|---|
FINIS | Finished product category | left$([F:ITG]TCLCOD,3) |
SFINI | Semi-finished product category | left$([F:ITG]TCLCOD,3) |
Structures (GESANM): Product category sequence number structure (example)
